Write/Burn a disc using the Windows built-in burning engine. Update or reinstall the Dell provided recording software. Install the latest BIOS update on your computer. Run the Windows Hardware Troubleshooter. Run a hardware diagnostic test on the optical disc drive (CD, DVD or Blu-ray drive). Remove the CD, DVD, or Blu-ray drive from Windows Device Manager. Verify that the optical disc drive is recognized in Windows Device Manager. If the issue is not resolved, proceed to the next troubleshooting step. Try different brands of recordable (R) or rewritable (RW) disc.Ĭlick on the troubleshooting steps below for more instructions. Refer to the User Manual of the disc recording software that you are using. If you are using a recordable (R) or rewritable (RW) disc, verify that the disc burning/writing session was closed correctly. see the Dell knowledge base article Guide to optical disc Drives and Optical Discs. Verify that the type of disc you are using is compatible with the drive that is installed on your computer. If you are using a recordable (R) or rewritable (RW) disc that was written on another computer, make sure that the disc is able to playback on the computer that was used to burn/record it. If the drive is unable to read discs, refer to the Dell knowledge base article Optical Drive is unable to read discs. Verify if the drive is able to read discs. It can cause ‘can’t read from the source file or disk’ errors. It can also occur if you get sent a file by someone and Windows doesn’t give you ownership of that file. Sometimes, Windows gets confused with file permissions and has trouble letting go. If there were bad sectors and they successfully got fixed, Windows may be able to move the file. Change ‘D:’ to the hard drive letter in question. Type or paste ‘chkdsk D: /f’ and hit Enter. You can also run disk checks from the command prompt if you prefer. 
However, this process may damage the file you are trying to move. The disk checking tool is self-contained and will tell you if it finds bad sectors, and it will be able to repair them in the majority of cases. Right-click and select Properties, then the Tools tab.Select the hard drive you are trying to copy from.
